Group Therapy in Richmond Hill

Some skills are hard to learn one-on-one because the thing a child is working on, making friends, taking turns, staying calm when things get tricky- only really shows up around other kids. Group therapy gives children a small, supportive circle of peers where they can practise real social and emotional skills in the moment, guided by a therapist. At Alpha Child Therapy in Richmond Hill, our group work helps children feel less alone, build confidence, and carry what they learn back into school and friendships.
What Is Group Therapy?
Group therapy brings together a small number of children of a similar age, led by a therapist, to work on shared challenges. Rather than talking about skills in the abstract, children practise them live with peers, through games, role-play, and guided activities. The group becomes a safe place to try things, get gentle feedback, and see that other kids are working on the same things.
Our Social Skills Group for Children
Our main group offering is a small social skills group for children, designed for kids who find friendships, sharing, taking turns, or reading social cues difficult. In a warm, playful setting, children practise skills like starting a conversation, joining a game, listening, and handling frustration, with a therapist guiding and coaching along the way. Keeping the group small means every child is seen and gets real chances to take part.
Benefits of Group Therapy for Children
A group setting offers something individual sessions cannot: a built-in place to practise. Children who take part can build stronger social skills and friendships, more confidence joining in and speaking up, and better tools for handling worry and big feelings. Because the skills are learned with other children, they tend to transfer more easily to the playground and classroom.
Parent and Child Workshops
Alongside our group, we run parent and child workshops on practical themes for family life. These give parents useful tools and children a hands-on, shared experience, and they are a gentle way to get a feel for how we work before committing to anything more.
Who Group Therapy Is For
Our group work suits children who would benefit from practising with peers, whether they are shy and socially anxious, find social situations confusing, or simply need a supportive space to build confidence. It can work on its own or alongside individual therapy. Before a child joins, we talk with you to understand their needs and make sure the group is the right fit.
